Number 31

The boutique hotel known simply as Number 31 isn’t exactly the kind of place you’d picture when you’re thinking about a hotel in Dublin. It’s small, for one thing, with only 21 rooms (which should be a good indication that if you like this place you should book well in advance). It’s really a B&B style hotel, too, so you’ll get a more complete experience. In short, it’s unexpected in some wonderful ways.

Number 31 is one of the top-rated hotels on a popular travel website, and that’s even when it’s up against hotels that cost five-seven times as much per night, so you know they’re doing something right.

This uber-charming hotel occupies a Georgian townhouse on a pretty street, and in addition to the beautifully-decorated rooms (some with modern touches, which are nice in an historic house), there are also the lovely gardens and lounge areas where you can relax and mingle with other guests.

Number 31 is located just southeast of the city center, and in good weather pretty much everything to see and do in Dublin is within walking distance. (It’s within walking distance in any weather, but the walk could be distinctly less enjoyable in bad weather.) The hotel is also near a few parks, so if you did yourself in the night before in Temple Bar, you can relax and recuperate a bit with a slow morning surrounded by trees.

Again, with only 21 rooms, Number 31 will fill up fast – especially during busy holiday periods – so book well ahead if you want to be assured of a room here. Note that this isn’t the kind of place you’ll want to bring the kids. Reserve this experience for a romantic getaway or a bit of solo peace and quiet instead. And if you’re a light sleeper, the rooms at the back are reportedly quieter, so ask for one of those.
