Soccer Stadium for Athlone

Well if that doesn’t just put your town on the map – Athlone finally has a proper soccer stadium.

The 2,000-seat floodlit Lissywollen Athlone Town Stadium opened last week after 4 years of construction. There is a second phase of construction to double the stadium’s capacity due to begin some time next year.

It wouldn’t be an Irish event without the clergy – Fathers Liam Murray, Eamon Kelly and Declan Timmons blessed the grounds and prayed for the team’s success this season. Their prayers seem to have had some effect anyway, with the town succeeding by three goals in their first match on Saturday against Kilkenny.
